Only a day away

June 11, 2013

My five siblings and their spouses have long considered me a few bricks short of a load. I'd like to report that they're too kind to say so, but that just wouldn't be true. Such is life.

In a recent exchange of late-night emails related to our mother's health, one of them remarked on my capacity for recall (I think it had something to do with a thousand word summary of Mom's visit to the doctor that afternoon.). I do remember things, but am careful not to let my range of vision sway too far into retro. That would be a sign of impending conclusion. Not ready for that just yet. Eyes forward always.

In any event, I wandered for a time into the shadowy recesses. What follows here was my final missive to the sibs that night. A few bricks short? Maybe so. I can live with that. Life is a journey. Life is good.

With respect,

Kevin Graham

Memories… misty water-colored memories.

Where do they all come from?

Where do they all belong?

It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside.

Memories… a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.

So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do.

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school…

It seems as though I've lived my life on the bad side of the moon.

Memories… time keeps on slippin', slippin', into the future.

Count the headlights on the highway.

Looking for an answer, trying to find a sign.

Take my word, I'm a madman, don't you know?

Memories… I remember when rock was young.

Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry.

I can see Daniel waving goodbye.

Must be the clouds in my eyes.

Memories…  Someone told me long ago. I was no more than a boy.

I'm not half the man I used to be. All lies and jests.

Happy ever after in the market place.

We simply choose to forget. I should be sleeping like a log.

Memories… a pocket full of mumbles.

Now I need a place to hide away. Shake it up baby now.

C'mon and work it on out. I get by with a little help.

Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Memories… Do you want to know a secret? No time left for you….

Too many mountains, and not enough stairs to climb.

Running back to Saskatoon. I am just a poor boy. No time left...

Gonna chase tomorrow, tonight.

Memories… I been waiting a long long time.

I've got something I can laugh about.

I feel good in a special way.

I'm in love and it's a sunny day.

Memories… no time… gonna play my fiddle.

You say why and I say I don't know

The fool on the hill

Ain't got nothing to lose.

Memories… nothing is real and nothing to get hung about.

One thing I can tell you is you got to be free.

The wild and windy night… the sun 'll come out tomorrow.

Life goes on… o-bla-di-bla-da.

Here comes the sun… let it be.
