Sparring through music

June 1, 2020

Reg is a fellow with whom I spar regularly on Facebook. It’s been suggested by observers that  Reg and I should have our own TV show called, "Reg and Kev from opposite ends of the spectrum”. I suspect this would be a short-lived airing, as our exchanges would likely devolve into no more than a shouting match. On one side, Reg would drone on about hoax viruses, Second Amendment rights (Reg is a Canadian, by the way, so how does that work?), faith-based government, individual rights, conspiracy theories, Bill Gates and the illuminati, government overreach, and citizen rights to armed insurrection. For my part, I would too often engage in public shaming and inferential statistical analysis… not nice, perhaps, but satisfying in the moment. Reg likes the ‘f’ word a bit much for network TV. He sees me as an “f’ing idiot”. Maybe he’s right. Time judges all.

This said, I tried for a moment to envision how such a show might roll out. As one who often sees the world through a lens of song, here’s my answer to Jamie, who suggested the show. How many of 46 can you name, artist and title?

Episode #1:

Kevin: Let it be, let it be…

Reg: We will, we will, rock you!

Kevin: You can check out anytime you like

Reg: Take a walk on the wild side

Kevin: Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer

Reg: Heaven holds a place for those who pray

Kevin: You know you got to go through hell before you get to heaven

Reg: I went down, down, down, and the flames rose higher

Kevin: Just call me angel of the morning (1968 version)

Reg: Hope you guessed my name

Kevin: I didn’t realize that you were laughing

Reg: And I’m already gone

Kevin: You say you want to have a revolution

Reg: School’s out for ever

Kevin: And she’s buying a stairway

Reg: It’s a long way to the top

Kevin: Dirty deeds

Reg: It’s too late baby, now it’s too late

Kevin: Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry

Reg: Ride, ride, ride, let it ride

Kevin: You know, feelin’ good was good enough for me

Reg: Well, shake it up, baby, now… twist and shout

Kevin: Every time I look at you, I don’t understand

Reg: Who… are you?

Kevin: I’m a believer

Reg: Boy, you’re gonna carry that weight a long time

Kevin: Don’t stop believin’

Reg: Fools rush in where wise men never go (name two artists)

Kevin: I am a rock, I am an island

Reg: Old man, look at my life

Kevin: You’re no good, you’re no good, baby, you’re no good

Reg: Mama, just killed a man

Kevin: Then one night in desperation, the young man breaks away

Reg: The answer my friend, is blowin’ in the wind

Kevin: You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’

Reg: Take it to the limit one more time

Kevin: I get by with a little help from my friends (name two artists)

Reg: Alone again, naturally

Kevin: My future lies beyond the yellow brick road

Reg: In the town where I was born

Kevin: Blinded by the light

Reg: Oh, I believe in yesterday

Kevin: You can’t always get what you want

Reg: Bang a gong, get it on

Kevin: Send in the clowns, don’t bother, they’re here

Reg: Clowns to the left of me

Kevin: Jokers to my right

Reg and Kevin: Here I am, stuck in the middle with you

With respect,

Kevin Graham
