Yes, Virginia, there is a Coronavirus!

June 22, 2020

DEAR EDITOR: I have the intellectual capacity of an 8 year old.

Some of my little Facebook friends say there is no Coronavirus.

Papa says, ‘If you see it on CNN, it’s so.’

Please tell me the truth; is there a Coronavirus?

VIrginia O’Magacap

725 Fifth Avenue.

VIRGINIA, your little Facebook friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Coronavirus. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion to its eradication exist, and you know that they abound and will ultimately return your life to its pre-2020 beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Coronavirus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no need for childlike faith in Science, no need for personal protective equipment, no need for Haagen Dazs single serving buckets to make tolerable this locked-down existence. We should have no pre-occupations, except in YouTube and Twitter nonsense. The eternal light with which every Thursday evening’s “Coronavirus: Fact vs Fiction” fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Coronavirus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to attend all the Petri dish political rallies in hopes of catching the Coronavirus but even if they do not catch it, what would that prove? Nobody sees Coronavirus, but that is no sign that there is no Coronavirus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the White House and try to see what makes the terrible rattling noise from inside, but there is a veil covering that dark world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, hope, love, and dedicated people like Tony Fauci, and you Virginia, can push aside the curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond Coronavirus. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in today’s tumultuous world there is nothing else so real and abiding.

No Coronavirus! By God! It lives, and will live forever in our memories of this year, 2020. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, it will continue to make full the frightening accounts of this experience and, perhaps most arguably, our childish response to it.

With respect,

Kevin Graham
